Evaluation of Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) Advisories for Enhanced Fishing Efficiency along the Karwar Coast, Karnataka

Abstract
Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) advisories based on satellite-derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a data provide valuable information on potential fish aggregation areas. This study compared catch performance from PFZ-guided and non-PFZ fishing operations along the Karwar coast, Karnataka. Catch data of major pelagic species, including Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) and Indian oil sardine (Sardinella longiceps), were analyzed from selected fishing vessels and landing centres. The results indicated that fishing trips utilizing PFZ advisories recorded higher catches compared to conventional non-PFZ operations. The use of PFZ information enabled fishermen to identify productive fishing grounds more efficiently, reducing search time and improving fishing success. The findings highlight the role of satellite-based PFZ advisories as an effective tool for enhancing fishing efficiency and supporting sustainable fisheries management.
